Wearing a seat belt is the single most effective way to avoid injuries in a crash – and yet, only 68% of Americans say they regularly buckle up. If 90% of Americans pledged today to always wear a seat belt, every year 5,500 deaths and 132,000 injuries would be prevented. Protect your children with these safe driving tips from the American Academy of Pediatrics.
Be sure to always use a:
- rear-facing car safety seat until your child is one year old and weighs 20 pounds or more,
- front-facing car safety seat until your child weighs 40 pounds and a
- booster seat and seat belt until the child is 4’9” in height and 8 to 12 years old.
Set a good example for your children by always wearing your own safety belt and reinforce the message with buckle up coloring books and stories.
Buckle up, Virginia! State police sponsor “All American Buckle-Up Week” and “Click It or Ticket.”
The Virginia state police sponsored these events at the beginning of the summer of 2007. In 2006, they ticketed over 1,200 drivers who forgot to buckle up and tickets aren’t cheap. So, why not save yourself money and keep you and your family safe by clicking your seat belt every time you get in the car?
